Kenya’s 400 Meters Champion Nicholas Bett Dies In Road Crash

Former 400 meters hurdles world champion Nicholas Bett has died in a road crash in Sochoi near Lessos in Nandi.

His death was confirmed by his family and Nandi Police Commander Patrick Wambani who said Bett died on the spot after the car he was driving veered off the road and landed in a ditch.

The accident occurred in the early morning hours of Wednesday, August
8, and preparations were being made to take the body to a nearby mortuary. The commander added the athlete hit a bump before losing control of his car at Sochoi near Lessos.

He was born on 27 January, 1990 and his first outing at national level was in 2010 when he was a Kenyan junior finalist.

He made his breakthrough nationally at senior level with a run of 50.39 seconds to place third at the Kenyan AthleticsChampionships in 2011.

Bett, who was part of Team Kenya that competed at the just concluded African Athletics Championships in Asaba, Nigeria, was travelling back home from Nairobi.

He became the first Kenyan to win a world gold in hurdles after his magnificent run in Beijing at the 2015 IAAF World Championships.

He was also twice an African Championship medallist, and his twin brother Haron Koech is also a 400m hurdler.
