It has emerged one of the aides of the besieged Migori Governor Zachary Okoth Obado, could have revealed fresh details that directly linked the county chief to the murder of Rongo University student, Sharon Otieno and her baby.
The detectives reportedly managed to get crucial evidence that paved way for the arrest of Obado on Friday, September 21, after over a week of probe into the murder of Sharon, the governor’s ex-lover who DNA test confirmed was pregnant with his baby.
TUKO.co.ke on Sunday, September 23, learnt the detectives were able to establish there was communication between Obado and the other suspects in police custody during the days leading to the murder of Sharon.
According to the authorities, phone records revealed their was a clear link between Obado and the other suspects in police custody, but the much needed breakthrough came when some of the suspects reportedly started talking.
The DCI sleuths reportedly persuaded the suspects to confess and become state witnesses in the case in exchange with lenient punishments as per the roles they each played in the crime.
One of the suspects is said to must have spilled the beans about what transpired and in the process implicated Obado further in the murder.
Caspar Ajwang’ Obiero, one of the governor’s personal assistants (PAs) and driver of the car that was used to kidnap Sharon and Nation Media Group journalist Barack Oduor, is among the suspects in police custody.
Obiero was arrested on Tuesday, September 18, and arraigned in court a day later alongside Elvis Okoth Omondi, the governor’s bodyguard. Other suspects in custody are Obado’s PA Michael Oyamo and former Member of County Assembly (MCA) Lawrence Mula.
TUKO.co.ke understands the detectives are still following other leads in the murder investigation with some sources indicating Obado’s wife, Hellen, was also not yet off the hooks despite husband’s arrest.
The governor is expected to appear in court on Monday to face murder charges after spending the whole weekend in police cell.
